Over the whole period owning consumer durables rate increased, except the data for washing machine when it decreased in 1979.
As is clear from the table, the most popular household technology was TV, being owned on average by more than 95 % of British families. The percentage of families had vacuum cleaner increased gradually from 87% in 1972 to 95 % in 1982. The same trend can be seen in the usage of refrigerators, but with significant increase by 21 % over the given period. Despite a 1 % decrease in 1979, the figure for families provided with washing machines saw an increase of 14 % over a 12-year period from 66 % in 1972. The most noticeable growth was seen in the percentages of households with telephones and central heating, where numbers nearly doubled. Coming to video and dishwasher owning, they were introduced later period with 18 %in 1983 and 3 % in 1978 accordingly.
