These days, the theme of learning a range of subjects at universities by the students become debatable. Some people think that the students should have choice to select what subjects they want. Others, however, are concerned that they must focus on only special subjects which will be helpful in the long run. In the following paragraphs, I would view and analyze both sides of this issue from multiple perspectives.
On the one hand, there are numerous reasons why universities put more emphasize on a handful of fields such as medicine, science or technology. The major factor is the demand of the government for specialists in particular areas. South Korea is the good example of it. It is considered as the country with one of the fastest- growing country in terms of hi- tech products industry. Obviously, the technological universities, where students are taught only to contrive a wide- range of gadgets, is most prevalent there. One of the most advantages of this trend is graduates would have secured job with adequate income.
On the other hand, everybody has a right to choose their preferred areas of study. Moreover, they could reach more success learning subjects such as art, history, philosophy and so forth about which they are passionate rather than studying undesirable thing. Furthermore, as development of the world is accelerated, nobody can predict what skills will be need in the future. Perhaps employers begin to value creative thinking skills above practical or technical skills.
In the light of above – mentioned facts, I am inclined to believe that studying particular subjects at the universities, in most cases, have more advantages for both students and government equally.
