The   multiple- line    chart       presents  how     percentage  of   people  aged  65  and   more  in     three   developed  countries   did   and  will  change   over  a  100  year - time   from  1940 to 2040.

 Overall, the   trend  was     and   will  be    upbeat   for  the  given  period.

Between   1940  and  1960, the  figures   for   USA  and  Sweden    grew    marginally,   reaching    10%  and   8%    respectively. With regard   to   Japan,   the  pattern  is    a  complete  reverse  at  the   same  time.  From   then  on,   the  proportion  of    population    aged   65  and  over  in  USA      rose   significantly  from   10%  in  1960   to  15%   in   1980  before   remaining  nearly at  this  level   until   2020.   It  is    expected  that  the  figure  for   USA    will  go  up,   accounting    for   well   below   25% in 2040.  The   indicators   of      Sweden   increased    moderately   between   1960 and   about  2016,  apart  from  circa  1990  where  there  was   a  drop  of   about 1%.   It  is   forecast  that   it  will  increase  for  the   rest  of   the  period    not   considering    the  dip   between   2017  and   2030, constituting 25 % at the end of the period.   The  figure   for   Japan    remained    steady    for   30  years   in  a  row   from  1960  to  1990.  Since   then  on, the   percentage  of  people     aged   65  and  over  started   to  rise     moderately  and  it  is   anticipated    that     it    will  reach   an  all  time   high   of   well  over  25%    by  the  2040.
